About the Artist

I've been drawing all my life.  I started painting Wellington City landscapes around 2005.  I started selling prints of my paintings around 2009 as a hobby and eventually developed it into my livelihood.

I mainly work in acrylic on canvas.  I like to work on a variety of subjects but I’ve specialised in urban landscapes.

me down the mekong river.

My paintings aim to capture the comings and goings of the city, to help people remember places and events and to celebrates life in the City.

I paint mainly from various digital photographs and sometimes sit on the scene and do some sketching to get more of a feel for the scene. I usually work on a few at a time. I revisit scenes while I’m working on them.

I enjoy art history, especially painters from the late 1800s to early 1900s. I aim to incorporate aspects of these painters into my paintings. Some biggest influences in my painting style are Vincent Van Gogh and Edward Hopper. Vincent Van Gogh was probably the first artist to make me want to be a painter rather than a comic book artist with his high-energy style of painting and use of colour and movement.  As well, Edward Hopper - for his particular style of realism painting.

I also enjoy modern “low-brow” art including Robert Williams, Todd Schorr, Shag (Josh Agle), and Tara McPherson, and many more.

I like to make my art accessible to a wide range of different people so I’ve started a business selling prints of my art at affordable prices. Because of the colours and recognisability of my paintings my work reaches a wide audience.  I sell mainly at various markets, my staple being the Wellington Night Market, Friday Night on Left Bank and the Underground Market on Saturday in the Underground Car Park at Frank Kitts Park.  It’s very rewarding seeing firsthand people enjoying my work.
